MealApp: one food platform for discovery, reservations, and ordering
MealApp is a live food platform where diners discover restaurants, browse menus, reserve tables, and order delivery or takeaway — then pay — in one flow. Built on MERN, it replaces the usual stitched-together booking widget plus delivery plugin plus payment page with a single product.

The problem
Most restaurant-facing products force diners through three disconnected tools: a booking widget for reservations, a separate delivery app for ordering, and a third checkout page for payment. Every handoff loses users, and every tool needs its own admin screen for the restaurant.
The brief for MealApp was to collapse that into one product: a diner opens the app, finds a restaurant, decides whether they want to eat in, order delivery, or pick up takeaway, and completes the whole thing — including payment — without leaving the flow.
What was built
A MERN application (MongoDB, Express, React, Node) with a single data model that treats reservations, delivery orders, and takeaway orders as related entities under one restaurant and one diner — instead of three separate schemas bolted together after the fact.
Restaurant discovery and menu browsing sit in front of three order paths: table reservation, delivery, and takeaway. Each path shares the same cart, pricing, and payment logic so the checkout experience stays identical regardless of how the diner chose to order.
Order status updates in real time so diners and restaurant operators see the same state — reservation confirmed, order being prepared, out for delivery — without refreshing or calling the restaurant to check.

Hard problems solved
One data model for three order types
Reservations, delivery orders, and takeaway orders look similar on the surface but have different state machines — a reservation can be "seated," an order can be "out for delivery," neither applies to the other. The fix was a shared order entity with a type field and type-specific status transitions, instead of three parallel systems that each needed their own admin UI and reporting.
Keeping checkout identical across paths
If delivery, takeaway, and reservations each had their own checkout, every pricing or payment change would need to ship three times. Cart and payment logic were built once and reused across all three order types, so a fix or a new payment method only has to land in one place.
Status that stays in sync without polling the server to death
Diners expect to see "preparing" turn into "out for delivery" without refreshing. Status updates had to reach the client in real time without hammering the API with constant polling, which shaped how order state changes are pushed rather than fetched.
Outcome
MealApp is live at mealapp.app as a working product a founder can open and test end to end — discovery, reservation, delivery, takeaway, and payment in one session.
TODO(owner): confirm any publishable usage numbers (active restaurants, order volume, or user counts) before adding metrics to this case study.
Client note
“Ordering, reservations, and payments had to work together. MealApp shipped as a real food product founders can open at mealapp.app — not a demo.”
FAQ
What is MealApp built on?
MealApp is a MERN product — MongoDB, Express, React, and Node — with a shared order model behind reservations, delivery, and takeaway so the checkout experience stays consistent across all three.
Does MealApp handle payments directly?
Yes. Checkout and payment are integrated into the ordering and reservation flow rather than handed off to a third-party page, so diners pay inside the same session.
Can a similar build add delivery tracking or driver assignment?
Yes — that is a natural extension of the real-time status layer already in MealApp. See the food delivery app development page for how that scope is typically priced.
How long does a MealApp-style build take?
A focused version (discovery, menus, one order type, payments) commonly fits the full-stack web app band from $2,999+. Adding reservations, delivery, and takeaway together — as MealApp does — is closer to a custom SaaS scope from $4,999+, depending on features.
Is the MealApp codebase reusable for a new restaurant brand?
The architecture — shared order model, shared checkout, real-time status — is reusable as a pattern for a new build. The actual MealApp codebase and brand are not for resale; a new project would be built fresh using the same patterns.
